CHARACTER INFORMATION

Character Name: Eames
Canon: Inception
Canonpoint: Midway through the Fischer job (level 2, the hotel).
Character Age: ~33

Appearance: N/A

Background/History: Wiki entry

Strengths:
+ Creative: The inception team is made up of, at the core, two parts. Logic and creativity meeting in the middle to pull the job off. As a forger, Eames is the latter half in spades. He says it himself when Cobb first asks about performing inception, mentioning that it takes imagination (something he notes that point man Arthur lacks). In the same conversation, Eames also says he's attempted inception before, but that it didn't take since the idea wasn't planted deep enough. Through this, we're able to see that he's willing to think outside the box of what's possible vs impossible, especially in regards to dreamshare.

Moreover, his whole role embodies a creative one. He's a forger, which means in a dream he can imitate a person's being and mannerisms. A subtle art and one he takes seriously; he goes to Sydney to study the one mark (Peter Browning) to make sure he gets it right. Apart from imitation of real people, he also has his own creations– or characters, really. The blonde he forges to distract Fischer on the second level of inception is someone he's fabricated from the ground up.

+ Laid back: His sort of laissez faire attitude is a counter point to at least one other character on the team (Arthur), but he balances out the rest with it as well. Eames treats the other team members with relative respect, but is often seen joking. Whether it's to lighten the mood (his joking flirtation as the Blonde forge with Saito on the second level of inception) or to be something of an instigator (when he kicks out Arthur's chair to illustrate what a "kick" is in regards to a dream). It doesn't really matter if the other person finds it amusing, because Eames is there to laugh at it on his own.

Aside from an obvious sense of humor, he seems to shake most things off. Like water off a duck's back. When Cobb finally gets to sit down to talk to him in Mombasa, he asks if the Cobol Engineering price on his head was for him dead or alive. To which Eames simply replies "dunno, see if they start shooting". Implying he doesn't care either way and insinuating he'd probably be ready to bolt if it came to fruition.

+ Interpersonal Intelligence: Above creativity and his penchant for alleviating tension, this is his strongest suit. As stated before, he's a forger and therefore makes the study of people his business. But even when he isn't there to imitate someone like Peter Browning, he's able to read people, get to the heart of a situation. The biggest instance of this is when Cobb tells him what they're attempting to do (get Robert Fischer to break up his father's business). Eames suggests they start with the most basic component: Fischer's relationship with his father. Later, during the heavier planning, he's able to spin the probability of the inception becoming a catharsis, an emotional payoff for Robert and in turn, basically making it seem like Robert gave himself the idea all along.

Aside from understanding people well, he's also able to communicate his ideas or complex processes in the simplest terms. Again, his demonstration to Ariadne about what a dream "kick" is a good illustration of this. He's also able to boil down the initial suggestion of inception, turning it from Cobb's "I will split up my father's empire" to "My father accepts that I want to create for myself, not follow in his footsteps". In the further planning stages, he gives the break down of each level of the dream, each one a more layered version of positive emotion for Robert Fischer to be led into.

Weaknesses:
- Deceptive: We're first introduced to Eames as a thief through Arthur's comment ("there's plenty of good thieves") and then a forger second, when Cobb corrects him on what's necessary for the team. Already, there's an inherent bias on what kind of person Eames is because being a thief carries so many realistic connotations. As we get to see his character play out more, he doesn't disabuse anyone of those notions, leaning into them instead. For example, when they're planning out how to get close to Browning, it's mentioned that they might need to sneak someone in as a false employee. Eames outright states that forgery (in all its forms) is a "specialty". Already, there's another layer to what's to be believed.

Skills aside, he also plays up certain aspects of his personality. By the time the team starts talking about the compound time for each dream level, Eames has already proven his intelligence and dedication to the job. Except he fakes confusion and exasperation at the timing, stating "maths was never my strong suit". It could be that he's attempting to help the new Ariadne, who isn't as familiar with dreaming. There's also the fact he jokes, makes a bit of a nuisance out of himself especially where Arthur is concerned– it helps downplay the pride he takes in his work. And again, the intelligence he's displayed during the planning phases of inception. It's possible this isn't something he thinks to do consciously.

- Laid back: This gets him in trouble at least once, when Cobb agrees with his suggestion for the inception. Dom says it "might" work and Eames seems satisfied with the malleability of it. Arthur, however, gets annoyed with his shrug off, saying they're going to need to do better than "might". Eames simply eggs him on instead of switching gears and eventually Cobb cuts in to end the little spat.

- Selfish: When Cobb first approaches Eames, he tells him he's buying the drinks. He'd been gambling (and losing) and was only interested in being swayed away if there was something in it for him. This is sort of repeated when Cobb finally pitches him the idea of inception, since Eames seems to be somewhat uninterested at first. He doesn't make full eye contact with Cobb, sits with most of his body facing away from him, as though he has to be talked into the job. It's not until Cobb really starts in on the details that Eames becomes invested– essentially, when he finds out what's in it for him.

It's not always a material component either, seemingly appealing to his sense of curiosity can be enough to get him on board.

Later, on the first level of the inception job after Cobb brings a freight train through the street and admits that the sedative they're all on could send them to limbo, Eames is the first one to want to sit it out. At that point, he doesn't care that the job is worth a ton, or that Cobb can go back to his kids. He's out for his survival. Before Cobb mentions the thing about the sedative kicking them into limbo if they try to exit the dream, Eames is again the first one to want to shoot himself out of it as usual. He has to be talked down from both options.

Fatal Flaw: Selfishness. Eames is out for one thing and one thing only: himself. He takes pride in his work and when he's interested, works hard. But it has to appeal to him on some level before he'll make the commitment to even give it a try. At the first sign of real danger, he'll be ready to bounce unless someone can convince him otherwise.

Driving Force: Curiosity. He studies people for forges, takes the time to get everything right, down to the last mannerism. Underneath that lies a person who is interested in what makes people tick, why they do the things they do. It's what makes him great at the interpersonal intelligence aspect needed for the inception job to work as well as it does. And as mentioned before, he's willing to try something if he finds it interesting. Eames has attempted inception before and is curious to try it again, to see if he can get it to stick.

Patron: Aphrodite– Eames has developed an entire persona around being charming, personable, but fickle when the situation seems to get too hairy and he needs to bail. He's energetic about his work, proud of it as well, and is not ashamed to go to great lengths to make sure it's pitch perfect.

GAME INFORMATION

Setting Suitability: Boiled down to it, he'd be curious to know if what the gods offered was real. Aside from his people skills, he's also an accomplished fighter, something he shows in spades on the third level of inception when he goes against Fischer's militarized subconscious. When pushed, he's creative, hard working, and willing to test boundaries (for better or worse).
